I started pigeon racing in 1962. As a beginner I told myself if a bird wins a race or gets a combine diploma, that bird is finished racing that year. In three years I had put together a team of dependable racers. I flew with the Chino Club who was in the Mt. Concourse in California. My third year with these birds I won the concourse 1st Average Speed. My first birds were purchased from Art Hees in Pasadena. There were called Short Face. Art moved to little Belgium in Florida where he became well known. The world lost a good pigeon man as he passed away last year.

I wanted to get my family away from the drugs that were happening down the street. I loved to deer hunt, so I thought Colorado or Utah would be a good place to since I knew they both had pigeon racing and deer hunting. Funny thing happened. My Wife was a salesperson and went to a convention where she roomed with a lady from Utah. My wife mentioned that we were looking to move. She said come stay with me while your husband looks for a job. We went and I found a job at the very first place I went. The company moved us up here to Utah and I’ve been here ever since.

I built a loft at the house we were renting. I flew with the old Ogden Pigeon Club. Some of the old timers in that club who have since passed on were Bill DeYoung, Jene Wright, and Terry Sadler. A year later my Wife and I found a lot to built our home on. I moved the loft and kept the flyers in for a while. When I let them out they all went back to where the loft was and they sat on the ground. I took some crates and put feed in so they would go in and eat. As they were eating , I pulled a string to close them in. The next time I let them out they left for the old place, but as they got hungry, they all cam back.

We bought our home on the end of the flight line where we have won many races. Winning races isn’t always important. What is important is the friendships you make with all the pigeon men. And especially helping new flyers with birds and seeing the joy on their faces when they win. Some of the things that stick in my memory… This hen had lost her mate the week before and was still sitting on her eggs. It was Thursday evening, time to collect birds for the 625 mile race. Her eggs were just starting to chip so I put here in the basket and put the eggs under another hen. She flew that 625 miles day of toss for 14 hours. 1st place from Klamath Falls, Oregon to 35 miles East of Los Angeles. The next year, I set her up the same way. I hid her mate the week before. She again flew the 625 miles on the day. She sure loved to get back to her babies.

One day we released our trainers by Pasadena, while back on the freeway heading back home we saw the birds cross over in front of us. We were able to follow for a while We saw them come upon this big oak tree. They must have been on auto pilot because the blossomed out all over the tree. My partner called me later and said he was missing a bird. We wondered if maybe he got hurt back at the oak tree. Two weeks later he called me and said the bird was on the ground by the loft with a broken wing. That oak tree was two miles from his loft. To get home, the bird had to walk across fields, get through fences, and even cross the freeway. This shows the desire that our birds have to get home.

One time I came home from work and I heard fighting going on in the loft. When I peaked in the door, I saw a bird that had been gone for one and a half years. He must have taken the scenic route!

This sport teaches us how birds love their mate, commitment and responsibility. Something that we all need in our family life.

I have been racing with the club since 2011. I have always been competitive in nature and my years of competing with bird dogs led me to racing pigeons. I am currently building a family of racing pigeons based on strains from David Clausing, Flor Vervoort, Van Dyck, Fabry, Roosen and Others. I have enjoyed the friendship of the club members and the competition. I also have an interest in flying birds at One Loft Races.

When not tending to the birds, I enjoy the outdoors with my Wife and 5 Children. It has been fun to enjoy a sport in which I can include the kids.

Travis Dyson Dustin Maxfield Roland DeBeer

I started with pigeons many years ago training Field Trial Labradors, and my competitiveness carried over into racing homers. My Brother in law Dustin and my Father in law Roland and I thought it would be a good family hobby so we all went in together and started the Legacy Flyway Loft. We started flying young birds in 2011. We had a pretty good year starting out thanks to all the people that have helped us with giving us good birds or just with their advise. Don, Eric, Bryan, Sal and the advise that Jim, and Hank has given us. Its a really fun club to fly with, we love the competition here there are many great flyers and many good young flyers just starting out.

Away from flying pigeons I enjoy my wife and four kids, we love doing stuff as a family and we really enjoy the outdoors, hunting and fishing. And just spending time together as a family.

Dustin is on his way to starting his new family, him and his wife are expecting a little baby girl. He enjoys hunting and fishing as well as having some quite time with his wife. He also really enjoys his dogs and the outdoors.

Roland enjoys spending time with his wife and family and grand children, he has started a new passion in running marathons. He loves spending time with his dog Ben while he is training for marathons. He is passionate about playing the guitar.
